The Emsella Chair – My Experience for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

The Emsella Chair, created by the award- winning medical and aesthetics manufacturer BTL, aims to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles again and give us back control of both our bladder and vaginal health.

Like many women, a difficult vaginal birth has left me with stress incontinence and an overactive bladder which as blighted my life for the last 7 years. We are all told by midwives and health care professionals that we must always do our pelvic floor (kegal) exercises, but again like many women, life gets in the way and it is too easy to forget!

The Emsella chair uses HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) frequencies to independently target the pelvic floor muscles and muscles at the neck of the bladder. This causes the muscles to contract and release, in the same way standard kegel exercises do. However, with the Emsella chair, the muscles are given a workout equivalent to 11,000 kegel exercises per treatment session! This sounded amazing to me and not something I could ever achieve without clinical intervention. I liked the fact that I could remain fully clothed and be done within 30 minutes. The AL5 team, after a comprehensive and confidential consultation, advised that I would need 4-6 treatments for maximum benefit.

I did not expect miracles, as my issues are fairly deep rooted. I have seen many consultants who have advised a variety of treatments from tablets to calm an overactive bladder by stopping the muscles contracting as often, to antihistamines to calm the bladder and even long term high dose antibiotics to ensure no lingering infection was present. Nothing has helped long term and I have learnt to live with my symptoms. But no one should have to put up with these distressing, uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms and the Emsella Chair has been known to help women suffering all over the world.

The treatment itself is completely painless and non invasive. You simply remove your watch, and put away any electrical gadgets such as phones etc, and sit on the chair. You need your feet flat to the floor and also need to wiggle a little to ensure the pelvic area is targeted (not the buttocks area). So it helps to sit very upright with a straight back, no slouching! The sensation feels a little like a TENS machine, or pulsating current pulling your muscles upwards as it works its magic. The treatment alternates between a constant pulling sensation, and some quicker single pulses. Nothing hurts, nothing feels uncomfortable, you just feel it is doing good to those muscles down below! I took a book to pass the time and before you know it, 30 mins is up.

I have just completed my 5th treatment and I feel my muscles are much stronger already. It is easy to test out as I am a regular gym go-er and star jumps were a definite no-no before I started treatment, but I was very happy to notice that the last few classes I attended, that star jumps were no longer an issue and there was no leakage. I need to do the sneeze test yet! But I will certainly be updating on here over the next few weeks. I just wanted to share my experience and hope that it helps others – there is no need to suffer in silence. Let the Emsella Chair do the hard work on those pelvic floor muscles, whilst you sit back and relax.
